The header is inspired by an idea I've got gestating at the moment. I'll probably post more about it when I've had the chance to think coherently. Basically, it boils down to the fact that our education system is failing our youth, I have a very scientific mind, and I'm ridiculously lucky to have the opportunity to work where I do (The Robarts Research Institute).

We had our annual research day, and a huge banquet tonight to honour the recepient of the J. Allan Taylor International Prize in Medicine, a brilliant scientist who studies brain imagine and vascular risk factors for the onset of Alzheimer's and other dementia. Basically we had a whole day where I got to geek out over current neuroscience research, followed by an awesome dinner (100$ a person, paid for by my supervisor).

Bob McDonald (of CBC radio's Quirks and Quarks fame) was the key note speaker, and he was amazing. So much better than last year's banquet that went on for four and a half hours with a bunch of pompous officials telling us how wonderful the university was.

The best part of the banquet was at the very end, at the end of Bob's talk, the Dean of our faculty and Robarts' director had us put our hands up if we'd heard Quirks and Quarks before, and whether we'd learned anything from Bob in the past. It was amazing, because half the room had their hands up, and we have some of Ontario's best and brightest neuroscientists in the room.

I kind of want to see Bob McDonald do a TED talk.

In other news, I've signed up to run the half marathon in Orlando in February, and I'm committed to raising $4,500 CAN for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. I'll post my fundraising website shortly (my high school physics teacher donated 100$, because he's awesome), but I really need some help come up with fundraising ideas.

So far, I plan on selling the rubber bracelets (like the yellow livestrong ones, only purple and for Team in Training and blood cancer research), and I'm thinking of doing a few bake sales/waffle breakfasts.

Any other ideas?

Finally :

Mission: List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself.
Tag seven people to do the same.
Do not tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag "whoever wants to do it"

1. I'm a scientist. It means I'm insanely curious about why things work they way they do, I have infinate patience, and I'm going to question the validity of nearly everything biology/health/medicine related you say.

2. I don't get along with most people my age. I've noticed that the friends I have have parents who are the same age or older than mine (i.e. ~60+). I believe there's some kind of strange generation gap going on.

3. I listen to music nearly 24/7. I leave my CD player on repeat at night, and I rarely go anywhere without my mp3 player. I have zero musical talent myself.

4. I will eat pretty much everything (that's food). I dislike mashed vegetables of any form (potatos, turnips, squash, etc...), but I'll eat them to be polite. I cannot eat raw or smoked salmon if you paid me 100$. Something about the texture makes me sick.

5. I substitute fanfiction and fandom, with its rapid, high emotional pay off, for reality. It makes me a bit of a huge fangirl. I sometimes have trouble remembering my friends in London often have no idea what I'm talking about.

6. I live in my own head, and I find it really hard to open up to people about anything serious. A few close friends and my mom are the exceptions. I tell my mom everything, and she has the amazing ability of being compasionate while also kicking my ass into gear and telling me when I'm wrong or being stupid.

7. I've been known to hit snooze on my alarm for two hours or more. The worst part of this is not that I do it, but that I have three alarms, and two of them are in another room. I'm capable of getting out of bed, walking 30+ feet, and then turning around, and crawling back into bed. It's a terrible habit.

I'll donate something if I can do it from Norway ;)

Apparently I'm too tired to precess input today cause all I can think about is "what does the username mean?" ^_^'
